Tomás de Aquino: mais sábio ou mais santo?

Resumo

Visando ressaltar a grande relação existente na vida de São Tomás de Aquino entre a doutrina que defendeu enquanto filósofo e teólogo, e o alto grau de santidade por ele atingido enquanto religioso, desenvolve-se no presente artigo um estudo baseado no relato dos mais autorizados biógrafos do Doutor Angélico, o qual percorre sua ascendente e coesa trajetória espiritual. Ao lado do homem de gênio, destinado a marcar como poucos o pensamento cristão Ocidental, está o santo, que prega aos contemporâneos e à posteridade pelo próprio exemplo de maneira tanto ou mais eficaz que pela eloquência de seus escritos. /// In order to emphasize the marked relationship in the life of St. Thomas Aquinas between the doctrine that he defended as a philosopher and theologian and the high degree of sanctity that he reached as a religious, the present article develops a study based on reports from the most authoritative biographers of the Angelic Doctor, tracing his ascending and coherent spiritual trajectory. Alongside the man of genius who was destined to mark Western Christian thought as few others, appears the saint who preached to his contemporaries and to posterity by his own example as much as or even more effectively than by the eloquence of his writings.
