As virtudes sociais tomistas na República da Utopia

O tipo e a qualidade da sociedade condicionam a autorrealização da pessoa humana. Da mesma forma, o tipo de pessoas humanas que constituem uma determinada sociedade acabam também por desempenhar um papel (positivo ou negativo) nela e condicionar a autorrealização das gerações vindouras. Quando se fala de pessoa humana, autorrealização e sociedade, deve-se também falar das virtudes sociais. Neste sentido, com este artigo, pretendo descrever, analisar e mostrar como as virtudes sociais tomistas se encontram presentes na Utopia de Thomas More, um dos grandes humanistas de todos os tempos, e como elas não só garantem a
autorrealização de todos os seus habitantes, como também a harmonia e o bem-comum. Para atingir tal objetivo, inicialmente contextualizarei o pensamento de Tomás de Aquino. Em seguida estabelecerei uma relação entre o pensamento “tomista” e o “morista”. Sucessivamente, contextualizarei a obra da Utopia na vida e obra de Thomas More. Finalmente, descreverei e analisarei as virtudes sociais tomistas na Utopia, mostrando, de igual modo, como elas garantem o seu bem-comum e felicidade dos seus cidadãos.

The type and quality of society condition the self-fulfillment of the human person. In the same way, the type of people that make up a given society also end up playing a role (positive or negative) in it, conditioning the self-realization of future generations. When we discuss the human person, self-fulfillment, and society, we should also discuss social virtues. In this sense, with this article I intend to describe, analyze, and show how Thomistic social virtues are present in the Utopia of Thomas More, one of the great humanists of all time, and how they not only guarantee the self-fulfillment of all its inhabitants, but also harmony and the common good. To achieve
this goal, I will initially contextualize the thought of Thomas Aquinas. Next, I will establish a relationship between “Thomist” and the “Morist” thinking. Subsequently, I will contextualize the work of Utopia in the life and work of Thomas More. Finally, I will describe and analyze the Thomistic social virtues in Utopia, demonstrating how they also guarantee the common good and happiness of its citizens.

Considerando o interesse que temas relacionados à inteligência artificial têm despertado tanto entre estudiosos das mais diversas áreas, quanto entre o público em geral, este artigo pretende examinar algumas das contribuições que o enfoque psicológico aristotélico-tomista pode oferecer para questões filosóficas que o referido tema pode suscitar. Para isso, o texto faz uma breve apresentação do mencionado enfoque e uma exposição de aspectos de seus pressupostos teóricos relacionados ao assunto. Com base neles, ensaia-se uma análise filosófica da inteligência artificial para estabelecer algumas comparações entre ela e a inteligência real, tendo em vista a aprofundar o entendimento de ambas. As considerações finais tentam sintetizar o resultado dessas comparações a partir do conceito de intelecção que decorre dos supracitados pressupostos.

Considering the interest that topics related to artificial intelligence have aroused both among scholars from diverse areas, as well as the general public, this article intends to examine some contributions that the Aristotelian-Thomistic psychological approach can offer to philosophical questions that the referred topic may raise. To this end, the text makes a brief presentation of the aforementioned approach and an exposition of some aspects of its theoretical assumptions related to the topic. Based on these, a philosophical analysis of artificial intelligence is attempted, in order to establish some comparisons between it and real intelligence,
with a view to deepening an understanding of both. The final considerations attempt to synthesize the results of these comparisons based on the concept of intellection that stems from the assumptions mentioned above.

Ecclesia est Fortis et Firma: as Missões das Divinas Pessoas da Trindade com base na Eclesiologia de SÃO TOMÁS DE AQUINO

Para Santo Tomás de Aquino, a Eclesiologia tem profundas raízes na Teologia Trinitária. Mais especificamente, a missão da Igreja e sua atuação no mundo prolonga o efeito das missões das Divinas Pessoas, ou seja, a economia trinitária de salvação. Segundo a ótica do Aquinate, é possível, pois, ver a Igreja de Cristo cimentada sobre o mais sólido dos alicerces. Em síntese, São Tomás possui uma compreensão claríssima daquilo que a Teologia hoje denomina de “indefectibilidade da Igreja”, embora sem utilizar de modo explícito tal expressão, optando pela “firmitas”. Neste artigo, inicialmente, será compreendido o duplo envio do Verbo e do Espírito
Santo, para, em seguida, analisar a concepção tomista desta “firmitas inabalável da Igreja”. Empregando as figuras bíblicas de “cidade” e “rocha”, e ecoando os autores patrísticos, o Doctor Communis vê o foco desta “firmitas” no Verbo Encarnado e no seu Espírito doado aos homens. Em suma, ele conclui que a Igreja pode ser combatida, sem jamais ser vencida (impugnari potest, expugnari non potest).

For St. Thomas Aquinas, ecclesiology has deep roots in Trinitarian theology. More specifically, the mission of the Church and its action in the world prolongs the effect of the missions of the Divine Persons, in other words, the Trinitarian economy of salvation. Thus, the Aquinate sees the Church of Christ cemented to the most solid of foundations. In a word, he has a very clear understanding of what theology today calls the “indefectibility of the Church”, although he does not use this expression explicitly,
opting instead for the term “firmitas”. In this article, we will first examine the double sending of the Word and the Holy Spirit, so as to then analyze Aquinas’s conception of this unshakeable “firmitas of the Church”. Using biblical figures like the “city”
and the “rock”, and echoing patristic authors, St. Thomas sees the focal point of this “firmitas” in in a double foundation, linked precisely to the Incarnate Word and His Spirit gifted to humans, thus concluding that the Church may suffer attacks, but is never defeated (impugnari potest, expugnari non potest).

A Teologia Trinitária especulativa como “exercício espiritual”, segundo São Tomás de Aquino

Este artigo demonstra que, para São Tomás de Aquino, a procura de razões especulativas com a finalidade de elucidar a fé trinitária constitui um exercício espiritual de elevação da mente. Destinada aos fiéis, sem pretensão de compreensão ou demonstração, a teologia trinitária exclui todo racionalismo. Oferecendo razões de conveniência, ela propõe uma inteligência da fé que fornece consolação espiritual e os meios de defender a fé, preparando para a visão de Deus. O emprego da analogia do verbo e do amor (imagem de Deus) se inscreve neste propósito de São Tomás, retomado de suas fontes patrísticas.

This paper shows that, for St. Thomas Aquinas, the speculative reasons which make it possible to give an account of the Trinitarian faith constitute an exercise and an elevation of the believing mind. This spiritual exercise is addressed to believers and excludes rationalism. By giving fitting arguments, speculative Trinitarian theology offers an understanding and a defense of the faith, a training in order to see God, which procures a foretaste of the beatific vision. The use of the analogy of the word and love (the image of God) belongs to this project which St. Thomas takes up from his patristic sources.
