A devoção aos santos vivos segundo a doutrina católica

Resumen

Este trabalho demonstra, fundamentado na doutrina ensinada por Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório e São Tomás de Aquino, a licitude de invocar como intercessores perante Deus os chamados “santos vivos”: nossos irmãos na Fé que perseveram no estado de graça. Este piedoso costume de invocá-los, como testemunham diversos escritos e relatos hagiográficos, verifica-se nas memórias sobre a vida de todos os santos que, após seus respectivos processos de beatificação, foram canonizados. O povo de Deus, que participa de um verdadeiro e peculiar dom de discernimento, identifica, em contato com eles, a prática das virtudes em grau heroico e a exemplaridade de vida cristã. Assim sendo, de maneira espontânea, estes “santos vivos” passam a ser invocados como intercessores, mesmo à distância, e recebem simultaneamente calorosas demonstrações de respeito e veneração. Não obstante, como o atesta a História, ditas demonstrações de apreço costumam não ser bem compreendidas por alguns membros da hierarquia eclesiástica. O trabalho conclui corroborando que todas estas expressões de piedade e devoção se explicitam claramente à luz da Teologia da Graça e da Teologia da Divinização. Assim, elas estão em plena harmonia com as normas canônicas e a Doutrina Católica no que tange ao culto tributado pela Igreja aos santos. /// Based on the doctrine taught by St. Alphonsus Maria Liguori and St. Thomas Aquinas, this work demonstrates the legality of invoking the so-called “living saints” as intercessors before God: our brothers and sisters in the faith who persevere in the state of grace. The pious custom of invoking them, as testified by various writings and hagiographic accounts, may be observed in the lives of all saints who were canonized after their respective beatification processes. The people of God, who truly participate in a peculiar gift of discernment, identify the practice of heroic virtues and exemplary Christian life. Therefore, these “living saints” are spontaneously invoked as intercessors even from a distance. At the same time, they receive warm demonstrations of respect and veneration. However, as history attests, such demonstrations of appreciation are not well understood by some members of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. This work concludes verifying that such expressions of piety and devotion are clearly explained in the light of the Theology of Grace and the Theology of Divinization. Thus, they are in full harmony with canonical norms and Catholic Doctrine regarding the honor the Church renders the saints.
