Resumo

O presente estudo, de natureza teórica e bibliográfica, visa fazer um confronto entre os ensinamentos de São Tomás de Aquino a respeito da alma humana, e os atuais conhecimentos da Genética. Ao adotar e desenvolver os princípios do hilemorfismo de Aristóteles, o Doutor Angélico ensina que a alma é a forma substancial do corpo. Este trabalho passa do terreno biológico para o filosófico-teológico e estuda alguns pontos doutrinários fundamentais a respeito da alma humana. Este artigo considera, resumidamente, os principais fatos e explicações científicas relativos à transmissão dos caracteres morfológicos, fisiológicos e psicológicos dos pais para os filhos, e faz um confronto entre os princípios tomistas e os conhecimentos da Genética. Considerando o conceito hilemórfico de forma e o princípio de individuação, este nosso artigo procura mostrar a harmonia entre os ensinamentos tomistas sobre a alma humana, e os atuais conhecimentos científicos sobre a transmissão hereditária dos caracteres. /// This theoretical and bibliographic study aims to compare the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas concerning the human soul, and the current notions of Genetics. The Angelic Doctor adopts and develops the Aristotelian principles of hylemorphism and teaches that the soul is the substantial form of the body. This work moves from the field of Biology to that of philosophic and theological principles, and studies some fundamental concepts concerning human soul. This article considers the main facts and scientific explanations concerning the transmission of physical, physiologic and psychical characteristics from ancestors to their descendants. A comparative examination is made of the Thomist principles and the concepts of Genetics. Considering the hylemorphic concept of form and the principle of individuation, this study shows that there is a perfect harmony between the Thomist teachings on the human soul, on one hand, and biological heredity, on the other.
