Indefectibilidade: dom de Cristo à sua Igreja

Resumo

Este artigo procura entender a surpreendente substituição que se nota no comentário de São Tomás sobre o Símbolo dos Apóstolos, onde são enumeradas as propriedades da Igreja como una, santa, católica e “fortis et firma”. Para tanto, outras obras do Doutor Angélico são pesquisadas com vistas a averiguar se ele se refere ao conceito de “indefectibilidade” da Igreja, conforme denominado, pela teologia posterior. Para tornar tal comparação possível, ela é precedida por uma exposição do que os teólogos chamam de “indefectibilidade”, e uma breve verificação no Magistério oficial e na história eclesiástica. Isso prepara o caminho para uma investigação sobre a sólida base trinitária da conceitualização eclesiológica de São Tomás, que será efetuada num artigo subsequente, como continuação deste.

This article seeks to shed light on a surprising substitution found in St. Thomas Aquinas’ Commentary on the Creed, where he enumerates the properties of the Church as one, holy, Catholic and “fortis et firma”. This is carried out by examining other works of the Angelic Doctor so as to ascertain whether he is referring to what posterior theology would denominate as the Church’s “indefectibility”. To make this comparison possible, it is preceded by an exposition on what theologians refer to as “indefectibility”, and a brief verification of the concept in official Magisterium and Ecclesiastical history. This paves the way for an investigation regarding the solid trinitarian base of this ecclesiological conception of St. Thomas, which will be treated about in a subsequent article.
